Continuing our search for great weekend escapes from the city, our new camping adventure was planned for Killilea State Park, located just 2 hours south of Sydney.
This time it was proper camping in a tent as Vany McVan Face #2 unfortunately broke down. Luckily we have amazing friends who helped us along and we had one of the best weekends ever.
Camping in an awesome campground
Killilea State Park is truly one of the best campgrounds we’ve stayed. The price is a bit above average, though so are the facilities. The big communal fire pits, outdoor cinema, huge camp kitchen and walking distance to the beach. Many camp grounds with great facilities also means concrete slabs and cramming in as many people as possible, though Killilea still has the space and natural setting that makes the south coast so desirable.
Our bad luck sort of continued all the way down as we discovered that our blow-up mattress had 9 holes! We tried to fix them with plaster but by the time we found the 7th hole we gave in to an uncomfortable night sleep on the ground. Luckily the Shellharbour village is just a short drive so our second night sleep after a full day at the beach was amazing.
Surfing uncrowded beaches
Mystics beach is less than 10 minutes walk and a perfect spot for surfing and being active. The Farm is another famous surf spot surrounded by green grassy hills and a perfect spot for sunset drinks. There are many other beaches and surf spots in the area, all facing different directions so there is a surf spot for every possible wind and swell condition.
Enjoy an ocean view and tasty food
Shellharbour village is a cute little town with a few local beaches, and also has a few spots to hangout. We lunched at Ocean Beach Hotel and absolutely enjoyed the seafood selection. There’s a great big deck overlooking the ocean. If you’re after good coffee visit Village Fix.
Easy camp food ideas
Camp food doesn’t need to be boring and it doesn’t need to always be a BBQ (though we do love a barbie). Here’s a couple of easy ideas for a great summer night dinner.
Fresh salad and prawn rolls
An easy recipe containing a fresh salad mix of cabbage, carrot, celery and corn. Prepare it yourself or buy as a pre-packed mixture from the supermarket. Add fresh prawns, wasabi mayo or tartar sauce and your easy dinner is ready in a few minutes. Throw it on a bread roll or some healthy wholemeal wraps. Champagne goes a treat with prawns for that extra touch of class.
The Super platter
After a long day of sun and surf you can’t beat a grazing platter. Minimal prep, no cooking and no washing up. Endless options really, but don’t forget some fresh additions like carrot and celery sticks so you don’t feel too bad stuffing your face with cheese 😉
